                                                  T he catcher in the Rye The Catcher in the Rye is a novel by J. D. Salinger, partially published in serial form in 1945–46 before being novelized in 1951. The novel is narrated by Holden Caulfield, a 16-year-old boy who has just been expelled from Pencey Prep, an elite boarding school. Holden is cynical and disillusioned with the adult world, which he views as phony and corrupt. He longs for a simpler time, when he could be a "catcher in the rye," someone who saves children from falling off "some crazy cliff." The novel follows Holden as he wanders around New York City for three days, trying to make sense of his life.
